Find Grace in the Ordinary

In the Garden (1874) by Winslow Homer

We spend a lot of time chasing the big bulls. We dream of adventures, of pushing boundaries, of leaving our mark on the world. But here’s the thing: God’s grace isn’t limited to the mountaintops. Sometimes, the most profound moments happen right under our noses, in the quiet corners of the ordinary.

Think about Jesus. Sure, he healed the sick and walked on water, but he also spent time with fishermen, shared meals with sinners, and enjoyed simple pleasures. He understood that faith isn’t about constantly testing yourself. It’s about finding the divine spark in the everyday.

Now, don’t get me wrong. There’s a place for adventure. But just like a matador doesn’t spend all his time in the ring, a man of faith needs his downtime. Savor that cup of coffee in the morning, the warmth of the sun on your face, the laughter of children. These aren’t weaknesses, they’re blessings.

Remember what Christ said, “my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” (Matthew 11:30) He isn’t promising a life without challenges, but he is promising that he’ll be there beside you, carrying the weight with you. So lighten up, my friend. Enjoy the simple feasts life offers: a good meal shared with loved ones, a quiet prayer before bed, a job well done – these are all victories, small chapters in the bigger story.

Think of it like a fisherman at the end of a long day. He’s tired, his muscles ache, but his nets are full. He sits down with his family, shares a meal, and savors the peace that comes with a good day’s work. That’s the kind of peace Christ offers, a peace that permeates the ordinary, a reminder that grace is everywhere, even in the most mundane moments.

So don’t neglect the simple things. They’re the foundation of a strong faith, a reminder that God’s presence is woven into the fabric of our daily lives. Find joy in the ordinary, and you’ll find strength and peace you never knew existed. After all, sometimes the most profound victories are the ones won right at home.
